Since the dawn of man, Humankind has sought to play god. By magic or alchemy, they delve into realms they should not touch and often pay the price for their creations. Created are the Frankenstein's Monsters, Homonculi, Golems and other such human-created and alchemically animated. Created from the corpse of a human by a creator; in certain cases, desired components from more than one corpse are combined into a single end-product. Very rarely inanimate matter may be used as well, for a sturdier composition (aka the classic golem or gargoyle.)
These are non-human nature spirits, extremely long-lived and powerful in the use of illusions and natural magics. Fae are stronger and faster than normal humans, very durable, and known to be very beautiful. Their blood is highly enticing to vampires, although it gives them no nourishment. There are many types of Fae, but they all have their roots in differing kinds of natural magic. As such, they cannot perform spells in the way that witches do; their magic is inherently different. Fae are vulnerable to iron, which can bind them or kill them if ingested.
These humans are special, gifted (or perhaps cursed?) with a unique ability that set them apart. Aside from their inherent gift, they are a normal human, yet Management considers these gifted humans to be members of the supernatural community. There are a great many possible gifts, which include: telepathy, telekinesis, clairvoyance, pyrokinesis, technopathy, mediumship, empathy, psychometry, and pre/postcognition. While these are known to The Management, there are many others.
Just your everyday people. No special powers, no inherent gifts. Most humans are unaware of the real magic surrounding them in Le Cirque Nocturne, but there are a few who can see past their own limitations. Those who can sometimes choose to stay on as employees. A few other 'willing' humans have stayed on with Le Cirque as blood dolls or thralls to other supernatural creatures. The humans in the circus are considered part of the family, or if not viewed positively, at least not considered food.
These creatures are humanoid, but able to completely transform their physical forms. This gift (or curse) is either inherited (in the case of born shifters) or passed on via the bite of a shifter under the sway of the full moon. In their human forms, shifters are stronger and faster than normal humans. They are vulnerable to silver, and while somewhat longer-lived than humans, are not immortal. Shifters may be any animal with the teeth and claws to defend itself, but non-predatory shifters are incredibly rare. Most of these have been exterminated by stronger creatures.
Not all supernatural creatures are of this world. Through the use of magic, some beings have been summoned to this plane of existence from elsewhere. They may take possession of a mortal body, sometimes rendering it unable to age or decay (if it is dead). In these cases the body taken over is one that would not have functioned otherwise. If bound to a witch, these summoned beings are controlled by their callers. Spirits are vulnerable to banishing magic and to the bindings of witches.
Once humans, these immortal undead creatures have been Turned, and now must consume the blood of the living in order to survive. All vampires become stronger, faster, and tougher than mortals once they've been turned. Vampires are vulnerable to fire and sunlight, as well as being decapitated. Being staked is painful and paralyzing, but not fatal. Vampires can create ghouls by feeding a mortal a bit of their blood; this creates a somewhat stronger, faster servant that is in thrall to the creator. Some vampires display special talents, such as turning to mist, hypnotism, and shape-shifting. The older the vampire, the more likely it is that they've manifested one of these gifts.
Born to humans, witches could technically just be considered specially gifted mortals. They are able to tap into and control the forces of the universe, manifesting magic in a number of different ways. Sometimes this involves rigorous ritual, sometimes an innate talent. Most witches are gifted in a single area, although some of particular talent may master two or three gifts. Witches live only a little longer than normal humans, and have all normal human weaknesses. Known gifts include: elemental magic, light and darkness, healing, potions, charms and talismans, hexes and curses, and divination.
There are more creatures in this world, as well as others, than might be known by Le Cirque's Management. These might be legendary creatures such as dragons, or intelligent undead such as revenants, sirens, merfolk, harpies, etc. When the circus comes across these creatures, they too are welcomed into the family and offered protection from the outside world.
• These creatures will be accepted on a case-by-case basis. Feel free to contact the Mods with specific ideas.
